Do I Need to Hire a Designer or Architect?

This is a difficult question to answer as there are many factors in play.

  • First, consider the situation. Is this a new, simple staircase project or one that's going to be a showpiece in Architectural Digest?
  • Have you been able to plan the project and communicate your needs clearly?
  • Are detailed plans (even detailed minutiae) needed so all vested parties know what's being proposed?
  • Is the project sufficiently complex requiring specialists?
  • Is there a structural issue requiring the sign-off of a professional engineer especially in the case meeting local building code(s)?
  • Are aesthetics a major concern?
  • With what you've experienced, would you feel more comfortable with more resources at hand? Or, do you want to limit the number of cooks in the kitchen to avoid miscommunications or misunderstandings?
  • And, perhaps lastly, does the budget allow for additional specialists?
